Read about the last hanging in Brooklyn 1889 at the Raymond Street Jail (the site of today’s Brooklyn Hospital on Ft. Greene Park). Just after this the state of New York no longer allowed counties to execute the condemned and hanging was forbidden due to its “inhumane” nature. Instead the state itself oversaw death by the electric chair.
